In the past, many workplaces relied on annual or semi-annual reviews to evaluate employee performance. These reviews often created stress and did little to improve productivity or enhance the organizational culture.

Modern times call for a new approach—one that is more effective, respectful, and supportive. At our office, we have adopted a simple yet powerful system that includes frequent check-ins with team leads, office managers, or employees. The value of this approach lies in its respectful and curious communication about work, tasks, and projects. It is centered on the priorities of goals, metrics, and milestones. This system is flexible and designed to provide communication, feedback, support, and appreciation for actual contributions, allowing employees to maximize their strengths and grow in their areas of responsibility.

Our check-in meetings are typically 10-15 minutes long and scheduled on a weekly basis. These regular engagements are crucial for maintaining focus, promoting growth, and fostering fulfillment among team members.

To help you stay on track between major meetings that establish goals, projects, and metrics, we recommend using the following form during your check-in meetings:

Team Check-In Meetings

  1. What are you working on this week? What are your priorities?


  2. What obstacles do you foresee in your path to accomplishment? What is your plan for managing these obstacles?


  3. What support do you need from me? (coaching, time, schedule, training, video, time with coach Dee Dee or Mark, a clearer picture of your goal, honest feedback, etc.)


  4. Return and Report for anything that needs follow-up or celebration


  5. I appreciate you (character, attitude, influence, leadership, passion)


By adopting this system of regular check-ins, we can create a culture of respect and appreciation in the workplace.
